Kindle vs Kobo for Thai readers — 2026 buying guide
The most common question we get from first-time e-reader buyers in Thailand is "Kindle or Kobo?" Short answer: Kindle if you read mostly English from the Amazon store on a tight budget; Kobo if you already own Thai epub or buy from Meb / Hytexts. Below is the long answer, drawn from hundreds of bench-tested units of both brands.
Comparison at a glance
- Thai language Kobo has a Thai system menu and reads Thai epub natively. Kindle ships English menus and needs KOReader for solid Thai PDF rendering.
- Formats Kobo: epub, PDF, mobi, txt, html, cbz native. Kindle: azw, kfx, mobi mainly; epub needs conversion.
- Ecosystem Amazon's Kindle Store has the world's largest English catalogue. Kobo Store is smaller but the device works with any DRM-free source.
- Price Kindle entry-level runs roughly 500-1,000 THB cheaper than the Kobo equivalent on the secondhand market.
- Screen Identical in current generations — both use E Ink Carta 1200 or newer.
- Waterproofing Paperwhite and above; Kobo Clara 2E / Libra 2 / Sage. Same IPX8 rating.
Thai language and fonts
Kobo renders Thai correctly out of the box — vowels and tone marks float where they should. Drop in Sarabun or Kanit and it looks great. Kindle stock can display Thai but the default font is cramped for Thai eyes. The fix on Kindle is KOReader, which renders Thai epub better than the stock reader. We offer KOReader installation as a paid add-on — see our KOReader page.
Sideloading books
Kobo: plug in USB, drag-drop. Done. Or use Calibre over Wi-Fi. Kindle supports "Send to Kindle" via email and Drive but epub has to be converted to mobi or kfx first. If you have a pre-existing epub library, Kobo cuts out a step.
Build and ergonomics
At similar price points the Kobo Libra 2 has page-turn buttons, weighs less, and is thinner than the Paperwhite. Kindle Oasis matches or beats it but at a higher price. Under 5,000 THB the Clara 2E and Paperwhite 4 are our most-recommended pair for first-time buyers.
Pick by reading style
- English novels from the Amazon store Kindle. No question. Whispersync and Goodreads are worth it.
- Thai epub from Meb / Hytexts Kobo opens them directly.
- PDFs (research, manuals) Either, with KOReader installed.
- Audiobooks too Kindle Oasis / Paperwhite Signature work with Audible. Kobo Sage with Kobo Audiobooks.
- Heavy annotation Scribe or Sage — the stylus models.
Used-market price ranges, 2026
Roughly: Kindle Paperwhite 4 in good condition runs 3,500-4,500 THB. PW5: 5,500-7,000. Oasis 9: 6,500-8,500. Scribe: 13,000-18,000 depending on storage. Kobo Clara HD: 3,500-5,000. Libra 2: 5,500-7,500. Sage: 10,000-13,000. These are warrantied prices from sellers who actually tested the unit. Untested units run 1,000-2,500 THB cheaper but the battery / screen risk is rarely worth it.
Final recommendation
If you're just starting and unsure, a used Paperwhite 4 or 5 is the lowest-risk entry — Amazon still supports both. If you already have Thai epub and don't want to deal with file conversion, a used Kobo Libra 2 or Clara 2E will get you reading from day one.
